How to interview a home care agency

Questions that separate serious agencies from brochures

Anyone can say “compassionate care.” Before you invite an agency into your parent’s home in Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, or Manhattan, ask questions that reveal licensing, backup coverage, and how they handle hard nights.

Ask these

  • What is your New York license number and NPI? (Ours: license 2527L, NPI 1083076202.)
  • How do you screen aides — and what happens if an aide cancels at 6 a.m.?
  • Are registered nurses on call after hours for aides?
  • Can you match language (Russian, Spanish, Creole, English)?
  • How do you handle dementia behaviors or refusal of care?
  • What are private pay estimates vs insurance/MLTC steps?
  • Who is my ongoing coordinator, and how fast do you return calls?

Red flags

  • Vague licensing answers
  • Pressure to sign before assessment
  • Broken contact info or no real after-hours path
  • Promises that Medicare will pay for a full-time companion
